Studio Subject
ABPL30041 Construction Design
In this studio subject, I looked into the design thinking that goes into a building and how construction technology contributes to the resolution, performance and delivery of a design response.
My project is to investigate the language of building communication through looking at construction documentation of the McKinnon Senior School and to produce a model to demonstrate my understanding of construction design.
Analysed the subsoil conditions of the site. Ground conditions can have the potential to impact a design response in a very direct way: the capacity of the ground to deal with building loads causes impact on the feasible height of the building; the nature of the soil may also influence the feasibility of below ground construction.

Looked into the foundations/footings of the school. After analysing the sub-soil conditions, pad footings are used to provide stability to a clay site (reactive site). Clay moisture content becomes stable at about 2m in depth, therefore foundations are deeper for the construction of the school.

Prefabricated hollow core planks are used as the main slab system of the school. Hollow core slabs are best used for schools as hollow cores are thinner than conventional concrete poured slabs, they can achieve longer spans and are easy to install. This results in larger classrooms, speedy construction and to reduce construction costs.

Flexible connection systems are used for the school's roofing because they are simple to fabricate and erect, and also allows for some movement. Stability is provided by bracing.

Metal stud framing and roofing are used to divide floor space, provide resistance to penetration by the elements, provided a degree of thermal and sound insulation to the school. Heat insulation on roofs can be achieved by placing sufficient insulation wool blanket over the foil laminate, pulled taut enough to hold the insulation blanket. The insulation blanket is held hard against the underside of the roof sheeting as this dampens the rain-induced vibration at the point of impact. Safety mesh supports the insulation.

If these three main conditions occur at the same time, moisture will penetrate into the building:
1. an opening through the building (hence it is best to eliminate all openings),
2. water present at the opening (hence it is best to keep water away from any openings),
3. a force to move the water through the opening (hence it is best to neutralise all the forces that could move water through openings)
Strategies used in the McKinnon Senior School to address the potential risks of moisture penetration are the uses of upstands, weathering, overlaps, drip edges, drainage (gutters, weep holes & flashing), capillary breaks and sealant joints.
