Construction as Alchemy
This subject focuses on how design ideas are translated into the built form through the process of construction.
Assessment 1A required me to design a single skin brick wall that celebrates the art and craft of brickwork.
Assessment 1B required me to design and detail a relaxation platform made from timber that relates to my brick wall. The platform structure consists of stumps on pad footings, bearers, joists and decking by using span tables and understanding structural principles of strength, span and spacing.
Assessment 1C required me to compose a simple steel shelter that connects well with my relaxation deck as well as my brick wall. With the assumption that this project is a sketch only to be checked for structural integrity by an engineer later, I was tasked to use hot-rolled and cold-formed members as well as roof sheeting to create my steel shelter.
Assignment 1A- Curved brick wall, played with brickwork and created interesting patterns on wall surface.

Assignment 1B- Created a relaxation platform for visitors, the deck inner edges follow the edges of the brick wall to create a seamless look.
Assignment 1C- Created a roof structure that shields my wall and visitors from the rain. It also has a raingarden that collects the diverted water from the gutter system. This raingarden was inspired by the rain vortex found in Jewel Changi in Singapore.
