In this studio subject, I explored the relationship between my design response and dynamics of dwelling and the urban landscape, co-habitation, population density, integration and fostering of ecological systems in an urban setting. I did so through incremental densification of the MacArthur Place precinct, which has strong heritage characteristic, by interrogating urban qualities, landscape and architectural responses to the neighbourhood.
I was tasked to develop a masterplan for the precinct. With the background that the Carlton City Council has declared climate catastrophe and aims for a Zero Carbon Carlton by 2035, the council wants proposals that imagine the MacArthur Place precinct as a prototype and model for future inner urban densification developments to address climate change, foster inner urban ecologies and biodiversity. The council also wants proposals of housing designs for densification.

The goal for my Zero Carbon Carlton at the MacArthur Place precinct is to create a compact and adaptable residence which can accommodate different co-habitation scenarios.
My proposal of a Zero Carbon Carlton includes a shared street network along the outer edges of the site. By merging both vehicular and pedestrian network (adopting a curb-less street model), quality of life around the precinct can improve due to easier access to open spaces, allow for additional space for communal events and encourage individuals to freely walk around and do exercise (vital during a pandemic).

Looked into how the environment impacts the design. Most of the summer wind comes from the south, therefore trees will be planted at the square and along the infiltration strips on the shared streets. I have densified the 3 plots of my choosing by arranging them into mini townhouse styled dwellings. Dwellings on 2 MacArthur Place will allow for multi-generational living, dwellings on 4 MacArthur Place are standard townhouse styled dwellings and mini apartment styled housing are arranged on plot 6-10 MacArthur Place.
Looking at 2 MacArthur Place in more detail, dwellings on the plot are able to adapt and accommodate different co-habitation scenarios:
First scenario: During the first decade, the house accommodates a core family (parents and one child) and the grandparents. Therefore, the house allows for a balance mix of interaction, independence and privacy.
Second scenario: During the second decade, the house changes and accommodates a live + work arrangement for parents to work from home. The house ensures privacy between the work and domestic programme.
Third scenario: During the third decade, after the grandparents has passed away, the house & plot of land changes again to accommodate dual-occupancy. The plot of land allows for two independent units, one for a couple and one for a single.

Comic illustrations to depict scenes of the changes that took place throughout the different decades.
